Stillness
In times past, I have found myself reeling from the cacophony of life. When that would happen, I learned to seek stillness. This time of lockdown gives me stillness in my everyday life. Within the stillness lie opportunities for me. Can I rise to them?
The Power of Stillness
Stillness connects us to a quieter world. It clears the mind and the senses, leaving them open to whatever may be near. Within stillness lies the essence of thought, reflection and peace. Often, solitude is its companion, but not always.
Stillness can be uncomfortable in our world. Grappling with this discomfort is a productive pursuit. We must bring the mind and heart into balance. We must calm our physical body and our emotions. In doing so, we open ourselves.
There are Openings that are only seen from a place of stillness.
Noise And Movement Can Obscure Some Openings
Although Openings exist within noise and movement, the Openings within stillness are of a different nature. Noise and activity can demand all of our attention. Noise and activity can require our total focus or put us to “sleep” – failing to see what is around us. Our senses and emotions are consumed.
Some Openings ask for our stillness and quiet reflection before they can be seen. Their sounds are soft. They are gentle. They require our senses to be alert to them. Only a peaceful person can walk through them and be ready for what is on the other side.
Stillness Takes Us Deeper
Stillness is a natural state. Stillness is possible even in the midst of chaos. Stillness aligns our energy in a way that serves us. Stillness takes us deeper to inspiration, imagination and vision. Some things can only be dealt with or discovered from a place of stillness. Stillness like feminine energy is receptive, not forceful.
Stillness mirrors the Cosmos. A few years ago, I started a practice of sitting with the stars. Each night I would go outside and sit in our sacred circle. At first, I would fill myself with love. Then, I would quiet myself and look at the sky. Over time, I began to feel the stillness of the Cosmos. There was movement, however, in shooting stars and the sparkle of stars and planets. As I connected, I felt the Cosmos was within me and that I was one with it.
➟ My free ebook, Chrysalis, shows how the caterpillar uses stillness to transform into a butterfly.
Stillness Supports Balance
Noise and activity are dominant in our world and have been for a long time. As our minds and masculine energy have dominated our hearts and feminine energy, we see in our world today a dire need for rebalancing. Stillness supports that rebalancing.
One way to still the mind is to allow our hearts to have a say in our lives. Love and caring are powerful forces on so many levels and should be given their due. What if you had a decision to make and checked in with your heart as well as your mind?
Another way to find stillness is to pause. Pausing periodically during the day allows us to stop what could be a runaway train from taking us nowhere. As we pause, more often we acclimate and stillness is not as uncomfortable as it used to be. We are retraining our present instincts towards motion and activity.
Creating Stillness
If we are to make ourselves available to many of the Openings around us, stillness is a key component. We can actively create stillness and allow it to be a regular element of our lives. Creating stillness requires strong intention and pulling away from our inclinations to always be busy. We have associated “doing” with our success in life. “Being” is equally important to our success and fulfillment.
If we want more stillness in our lives, we can be intentional and create it. In doing so, we avail ourselves of Openings otherwise unavailable to us. In stillness is power and that power can be ours.
I find that stillness is nothing to be afraid of. It may have been unfamiliar, but is now a natural state for me. Stillness holds magic and mystery. Stillness calms me. Stillness holds many Openings for me and for all of us.
