Recognizing A New World
Parts of my life are out of sync. I’m not sure why. I am living my life as I always have.
The Past
How did the world look three years ago? For many, it looked very different. The changes induced by the pandemic and increasing political and cultural polarization are significant ones. Looking back allows us to ground ourselves – to recognize the circumstances we have come from to where we are now.
Although the worlds we were in three years ago varied by our individual circumstances, there were some commonalities. We were not concerned about a global virus. We interacted freely. All kinds of venues and experiences were open to us. We worked together in communal spaces without concern. We were free to go where we pleased.
We know now that many aspects of our past are gone. We may have to mourn these losses before we can move on and be fully in the present. What does this mean for us? How have we adjusted? Are we conscious of these changes and adapting to them? Or are we going along, expecting the past to return?
The Present
In the present moment, do we know where we are? We certainly have been through significant change. Some have experienced deep losses. As a protective mechanism, we may have numbed our senses to what is happening around us. We are going about our life but are not fully engaged in it.
It is time to ground in the present moment. We must take steps to be fully present in the world as it is now. We can do this by first identifying what has changed in our lives in the last three years. How is our life different? Do we like the way things are? Do we wish the past would return? Are we turning away from the present because we do not like what we feel or see?
Let’s then look back at the changes that occurred, their impacts on us and how we responded to them. Embrace all of it. It is the only way to be fully in our lives. Denial puts our heads in the sand and we cannot see. Intense emotions eventually derail us. Anxiety confuses our minds and we cannot use them effectively.

Staying Aware
Once we are fully present in the moment, we should stay there. We can decide what we like and what we don’t like about our present situation and what we want to do about it – enhancing what we like and releasing what we do not. We can look at how we coped and adjusted to change and how we want to do that now.
We can commit to staying aware as we go forward. We can consciously observe our lives and the changes that are occurring. We can act in our best interest, accepting what we must and changing what we can. In doing this, we are living fully in the world that exists now.
We can find ways to support ourselves through change. To live our best life, whatever the circumstances that surround us. There will be good times and bad times ahead – we can walk consciously through them. Do we have a choice? We do not control all that happens in our world. We do control how we respond to change and can do that well.
Creating Our Future
We are not at an endpoint of this transformation. There is more change to come. We are facing huge uncertainty and unknowns. We can develop the skills and strength we need to thrive. Stability through change is possible if we accept the presence of the unknowns and uncertainty that exist.
Change brings wonderful opportunities to create our future. Think of the changes that are possible now that were not possible in our past – work flexibility, more time available to us, less social demands, a quieter way of living, realizing the parts of our past that no longer serve us and realizing the glaring need for new social and political systems that bring us together, not tear us apart.
We know we are in a new world now and we recognize all the opportunities and challenges it offers. As change continues, we are able to turn our attention to the future and creating the world we want to live in.
I see it now. Things in my life were out of sync, as the world around me changed and I did not change myself to be in sync with it.
