The Time Between Openings
Not much is happening in my journey now. I feel kind of becalmed. Is this okay or should I be in motion?
Waiting or Resting?
As humans, we are sometimes uncomfortable with a lack of activity. We think motion is the only way. Quiet times seem unproductive. That’s the way our society is made – stay in motion and be productive. Otherwise, our time is not well spent. This perspective misses the value of inactivity. We lose something if we subscribe to it.
During a down time when Openings are gone and there isn’t much “doing” we have the opportunity to spend some time “being” and will be the better for it. We can open our lives to inactivity. Quiet times have a lot to offer us – rest, time to think and feel, restoration, regrouping and returning to center. We can value resting and make the most of it.
If we are only looking to the future during a time between Openings, we are missing the present moment. We are spending our time waiting instead of living. We don’t know what the future will bring and we tend to try to define it any way we can so that we don’t have to sit in the quiet and unknown. Waiting passes the time, but also can steal the present from us.
The Power of Quiet Times
Our inner life is comprised of our thoughts, emotions and sometimes our souls. It is a rich world that when activated makes our life better in many ways.
We can have as rich an inner life as we have an outer one. So much awaits us within ourselves. Our inner life is all ours. No one else controls it (unless we let them). Our inner life deserves our cultivation.
The quiet times that occur between active Openings can hold a lot of power. They allow us to regroup and make some space in our lives. They allow us to settle and come back to ourselves. They often provide us with insights and new perspectives as our minds and time are not cluttered with activities. Used well, they advance us and can be very productive.
So, when we are in a period of quiet inactivity let’s turn inward and take advantage of what the inactivity is offering us. Let’s value quiet time equally with active times. Spend some time acclimating to quiet and a rich inner life. Then, what we cultivate in quiet times will serve us as we get back into action.

Preparing Without Knowing
As we sit in quiet times and focus on our inner lives, we are not idle. We may very well be preparing ourselves for the next Openings to appear in our lives. We just are in the unknown and that can be uncomfortable. It is doubtful that nothing is happening. We are still thinking, feeling and perhaps even doing. Doing, however, is not dominating our lives.
We may even be preparing for a new Opening without realizing it. Before a new Opening can appear, we may need to settle or create a new perspective so that we can see it when it comes. We may have work to do, such as developing a skill or changing our life in some way. The preparation time is productive, we just are not sure where we are going.
The “without knowing” part of this is tricky. We need to follow our instincts and trust that if we stay in touch with our inner selves, we will head in a good direction. Tolkien said, “Not all who wander are lost.”. Wandering can serve us. The unknown is a part of life and can hold great possibilities for us.
Using This Time Well
When we find ourselves having time between Openings, let’s welcome them. This time is a gift. It may hold opportunities that are essential to taking advantage of the next Opening that appears. Revel in this time. Make the most of it and see its value to our life and well-being!
Hah! It may take some time to welcome the quiet, but I can see its value now.
