Openings That Leave Us Restless

Five wild horses in various positions of movement

I said “yes” to an Opening. I did not expect this restlessness once my choice was made.

Many Types of Openings

There is not alone a single type of Opening or a one-size-fits-all Opening. Openings are tailored to our individual journeys. Opening Blog addresses all types of Openings-ones that can cause fear, ones that bring challenges, ones that bring growth, fast ones, slow ones, big ones, small ones, recurring ones, painful ones, ones we are grateful for, radical ones, obscured ones and ones that require a leap of faith.

Openings bring us whatever is needed at the time they appear. They are catalysts on our journeys. This variety of Openings affects us in body, mind and spirit, sometimes all at once. One type of Opening, say a challenging one, may affect each of us in a different manner. Some may be energized by it. Others may be intimidated, having to keep fear at bay and summon courage.

As we consider an Opening, we can first put some attention on what type of Opening is in front of us. This will help in making our choice regarding whether or not to enter. It will tell us something about the nature of the Opening. Have we encountered this type of Opening before?

Openings That Leave Us Restless

Some Openings leave us restless. Restlessness is characterized by a lack of quiet, stillness  or rest. It is defined as showing a persistent desire for change or action. Restlessness can be within us or outside us. Restlessness can cause a buildup of positive energy. It can also cause anxiety. Restlessness can indicate that we are not where we want or are meant to be, but we don’t know where to go. Restlessness can leave us jumpy and unsettled.

When we feel restlessness within an Opening, finding the source of our restlessness can move us along. What are we anxious about? What’s going on in our mind regarding this Opening? Is our restlessness an indication that something is wrong? Are we unsettled by the presence of this Opening and finding it hard to concentrate? Is the Opening challenging us, leading us to feel uneasy?

Restless Openings often confront our belief systems. We may be restless because the Opening, or the prospect of one, takes us out of our comfort zone. The Opening may put us in a place where we are facing significant unknowns, leaving us anxious and concerned. The path to or within a restless Opening may leave us unsure of where to go or where we are going. We may find ourselves losing perspective or confidence due to our restlessness.

How To Handle a Restless Opening

Often, when we face or enter a restless Opening, we find ourselves pulled away from our center. Our uneasy feelings distract us and take away our focus. When this occurs, we need to address it as soon as we recognize what is happening or our restlessness will take us on an unproductive ride. We need to pull ourselves back to center and regain our focus, so that we can handle the Opening that is before us.

Restlessness can cause destructive behaviors such as overeating, too much drinking or distraction to avoid the feeling of restlessness. These behaviors can be habit forming, taking us further away from what an Opening offers us. These habits can become part of our daily existence, sabotaging our growth and happiness. They can be insidious and take control, without our even being cognizant of what is happening.

What can we do when these things occur? Here are some ideas.

  • We can increase our commitment to make the most of what an Opening is offering us.
  • We can create a vision of where we want to go within this Opening.
  • We can balance ourselves – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
  • We can maintain our center and calm ourselves, within the restlessness we are experiencing.
