Transformation From The Inside Out

In my book Chrysalis, I use nature’s process of chrysalis – a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly – to inform the process of personal transformation. What does this mean – from the inside out?

Starting From Within

Intentional transformation – that which we initiate ourselves – is best started from within. Our intuitions, minds, emotions and insights lie within us and we do best when we employ them. Going within gives us time and space to take in what is happening. By doing so, we have the advantage of guiding our journey of transformation for ourselves.

Even when transformation is initiated by outside events or influences beyond our control, it is best to go within. We need time and space to assess what has happened and gotten us to this place of transformation. Will we proceed with or resist this change? What do we need to navigate the times ahead? Most likely, the best answers to these questions lie within us.

Our inner world is a magical resource. It must be cultivated and honored for it to activate and be useful to us. It is where our true selves live and where we have the chance to be at peace. Within, we are free from outside noise and interference. Within, we connect with ourselves. Within, we are able to consult with our souls.

We Know Ourselves Best

In nature’s Chrysalis, the caterpillar is alone with itself, in silence and darkness. Why is that? We don’t know for sure, but can guess that the process about to occur is complex and does not need outside input to succeed. It is possible that outside input is not wanted and could hamper the transformation occurring within the cocoon.

We each know ourselves best. We may not have it all together or understand everything, but we are getting there. We know our minds, emotions and inner selves better than anyone else. Others know their own lives, but not what is right for us. Best to take our own counsel as change begins transforming us.

Why retreat as the caterpillar does within the cocoon? There is power in silence and reflection. It puts us in touch with parts of ourselves not easily accessed. Within, our minds and emotions eventually quiet. We can center ourselves and consider what lies ahead. We can transform within so that when we move outside ourselves we know who we are.

Emerging

As our transformation advances, there comes a time when we can begin to emerge out into the world. We may have been operating in the outside world all along, even though we went within. From within, we begin to emerge with change already underway. We have made sure to reach an understanding and acceptance of the change that is occurring in our lives.

We know we are in a process of transformation and that gives us confidence. We are not reeling from the onset of change and transformation, as we may have at first. We have centered ourselves and have a sense of how we can proceed, because we have spent time with ourselves and considered the possibilities.

We can step outside cautiously at first, if we like. We control the timing. This emerging is about many things: facing the changes that are occurring as we function in the outside world, expressing ourselves to others for the first time in relation to change we are experiencing and seeking input from those we trust to enhance our own actions and perspectives.

Input From The Outside World

Even though we have emerged from within, we may not have completed our transformation. However, we are ready to be there and have strong inner resources to handle whatever we encounter. We have a handle on the change and transformation we are experiencing and can steady ourselves when we need to.

Response and input from the outside world may come swiftly and from many different sources. People love to give us their opinions and the transformation we are experiencing may be causing many changes in our lives. That’s why we initially go within – to know where we stand and to be ready to stay steady. If we had not gone within, we may have gotten tossed around by the views of others that do not serve us.

When we are ready and are out in the world, connection with others can serve us in magnificent ways. Think of the butterfly emerging from the cocoon. Its beauty is recognized by all. It can fly. It is renewed and an exciting life is waiting for it.

Transformation from the inside out is about safety, self-direction, protection and the power within. When I sense change coming in my life, I intentionally retreat so that I can make the most of it.
