Coping

A hurricane with wind bending palm trees and water surging on the land.

It’s a new world in many ways. We’re kind of in-between two worlds, actually. I want to keep my center and thrive. How do I adapt?

Maintaining and Sustaining Ourselves

Our world today is a big Opening, whether we welcome it or not. There are some things we do not have choice with, as we may have had with other Openings. So, what do we do? We find ways to thrive in our current circumstances and cope when we need to. Once we assess the changes we are going through, we can begin to focus on maintaining and sustaining ourselves.

Our focus turns to centering ourselves. What do we need to start seeing clearly again and to build a new foundation for how we live? How are we being affected by the circumstances of our current life? What are the red flags we see that must be dealt with?

Once the dust has settled, we’re better able to assess. How are things looking? What do we want for our lives? Can we find it? How are we responding emotionally and mentally? Do we need to make some adjustments? One approach is to do a life inventory – what’s working, what’s not, what do we want? That creates a picture that we can begin with.

How are you doing with maintaining and sustaining yourself? Coaching can provide a space to make things better and better.

When Things Show Up

We should keep an eye out for Openings. They are still here.  Some Openings we encounter may offer opportunities to maintain and sustain ourselves – perhaps an opportunity to move, an opportunity to take refuge from all that is happening or an opportunity to strengthen our resilience. Some Openings may come in the form of insights that give us a new perspective that helps us.

Things we perceive as positive and negative are bound to show up. We should practice discernment. Our point of view is affected by what we are experiencing and may be unsettled. Bringing ourselves back to center is essential. Once there, we can look at Openings fully from the present moment and from where we are. A negative experience can be a passageway to a positive outcome.

When we take advantage of a positive Opening, navigating it may be challenging. If the world today shocks or unsettles us, our footing may be shaky. The unknown is ever-present. We don’t know what will happen in the future. There is no predictability. Things around us seem foreign to our previous experience. We can take things step by step and do what seems right in the present moment.

Focus

Focus is a big ally in these times. Focus involves putting our energy and thoughts into an undertaking. It may be a task we want to accomplish or a way we want to live (like making sure we have downtime periodically or improving our work skills). Focus is a skill. Often, it is a skill we must develop and maintain to use. Focus can keep us steady during these times.

Distraction in challenging times always shows its face. It is an easy escape route. There are all kinds of distraction – mental, physical, emotional. Take your pick. However, too much distraction sabotages us. It takes us out of the present moment which we are trying not to see. Find ways to recognize distraction and rein it in. It does not serve us and has no positive purpose, when it’s around for too long.

When you find distraction over-present, try self-nurturing instead. When stress or negativity surface, we can redirect our attention to taking care of ourselves. This redirects our focus positively and benefits us much more than distraction does. We can ask ourselves now what nurtures us, what gives us joy, what moves us forward in a positive manner. When life gets challenging go to self-nurturing to soothe the situation.

We Can Do This

The world is in a Chrysalis right now. The butterfly has not yet emerged.  It is a messy time of transition and very unsettling. We can find ways to cope. We are resilient and talented physically, mentally, and emotionally. We are strong. We can do this.
