Holding Together for Openings

Rapids in a river with rocks and agreen shores.
A lot is being asked of us now. To navigate change with low visibility on the path ahead.

A Flow In The Midst of Change

Politics, Artificial IntelligenceI, climate change – these are just a few of the elements of change that we are now experiencing. Our best chance in navigating change is to find a flow. Flow exists wherever we are. If we are tossing in the rapids on a raft, we can still find a flow. Finding it asks for us to bring mind, body, emotions and spirit to the task and to carefully observe and understand the environment we are in.

How do we find a flow with all the new developments in Artificial Intelligence? Now we are being told AI could destroy humanity. It is best that we pay attention and have some understanding and awareness of what is going on. Once we do, we can decide how we want to flow within it. Will we jump in or keep a distance? What do we need to know to be able to navigate AI? How do we stay out of fear?

Are the change and chaos we are experiencing one big Opening? They could be. How do we adjust to that?! Same – we do our best to create a flow within them. Key will be to keep our center. With so much coming at us we need to be able to make good choices and change direction when warranted. We also need to maintain a keen awareness of what is going on. Past belief systems and approaches may no longer serve us, and new ones will be needed.

Chaos and Uncertainty

In the 1990s I became interested in a management theory, chaordic organization, that may be useful as we discuss our flow. A chaordic organization is a type of organization formulated by Dee Hock and others in forming the VISA organization The term ‘chaord’ is formed from the words ‘chaos’ and ‘order’. In the formation of the VISA organization, a means was designed to allow for the simultaneous cooperation and competition of the member banks of the VISA issuing network.

The mix of chaos and order has been described as a harmonious coexistence displaying characteristics of both, with neither chaos nor order dominating. In dealing with chaos and uncertainty can we create some order? We will not control the change or chaos, but we can find order of some sort for ourselves. Order may be a daily practice to stay balanced and clear. Or ways to stay out of fear.

It will not serve us to look only for order in our lives. At least, not right now. Chaos and uncertainty are very present and must be recognized. Total order may not be possible, as much as some may want it. How do we balance chaos and order in these times? How do we flow with chaos and uncertainty and make the best of them?

Letting Go

In the rapids of a river there is an element of letting go. We need a flexible craft that can handle the speed, obstacles and changing currents we encounter. We need a high level of alertness to maintain awareness of the river and environment we are in. We need flexibility and quick response to surrounding conditions. We need to stay in the craft and not be distracted!

Acceptance is a key element of being able to let go. Can we recognize and accept the world we now exist in? Can we look at it without too much turning away or denial? With acceptance, we can navigate what is around us. Some describe acceptance as “surrender”. Here the word surrender is being used in a positive way. As we surrender to what is, we give ourselves the best chance of maintaining our flow and forward momentum.

Release comes in as well. We may be experiencing strong reactions to what is occurring in our world. Our reactions can put us in opposition to what is. That’s okay, however we want considered responses to conditions, not empty or thoughtless reactions. What serves us is to release what doesn’t serve us in handling our world today. With that release, we make room for better attitudes, responses and solutions to what we experience.

Present Moment

So much comes down to being fully present in the moment, doesn’t it? Holding together for Openings involves balance and connection among all parts of ourselves. The only place from which to achieve this is the present moment. So, let’s get there and stay there so that we can hold it together for Openings!

We can do this. This is an exciting time to be alive, if a demanding one. It is filled with possibility.
