Seeking Openings
I am developing both my ability to recognize Openings and my courage to walk through them. I’ve been wondering – can I actively and intentionally seek Openings in my life?
Passive or Active?
It is the start of a new year – a time of resolutions, hope, intentions and, this year, a good share of uncertainty. What 2021 will be is both unknown and up to us. We will create it. What kinds of Openings are already before us? What kinds are yet to come? Do we accept the unknown and leave it there or do we actively examine the Openings that are possible in the coming year?
The idea of seeking Openings turns our journey on its head. Is our journey under our control or does the journey “happen” to us? Recognizing Openings that appear on our journey is one thing. Actively seeking them is another. Why not try? It is possible that it is within our capability to seek out Openings and direct our journeys to them.
Using a passive approach, we sense and recognize Openings that appear. We then choose whether to walk through them. An active approach involves a little more than that. We seek out Openings to keep our journey moving. We may see them before they naturally would appear. We consciously make them a part of our journey and we cultivate them.
Are Openings There?
Openings are opportunities for growth and transformation that present themselves to us. An opening may come in the form of an insight, a dramatic change, a person we meet, an expansion or contraction in our life or a new opportunity. An Opening can be related to mind, body, emotions or spirit. As we look at our lives, past and present, we can see the existence of Openings, as they are described here.
We have a lot still to learn about the nature of Openings. Exploring Openings is an adventure for us. Why not try? Openings are a way of perceiving opportunities that present themselves to us. They are changes, challenges and adventures that keep us growing and our journey moving.
Can we agree on this concept of Openings as we proceed? Openings are there and our focus is whether we can seek them out or they must first come to us. We all have seen these Openings in the course of our lives. We are looking a bit closer now. We are trying to understand their magic so that we can actively employ them in our lives.
What To Do?
Openings stimulate the best parts of us. They lead us to new concepts that we had not considered before. They raise our energy and optimism about our lives. What might this look like? Let’s speculate on how we may seek Openings in the new year. We can sharpen our awareness of what is around us. We can actively identify people and opportunities that could bring Openings into our lives.
Seeking Openings will be different for each of us. We are our own best counsel. We may read a lot. We may experiment. We may enhance our sense of curiosity and adventure. We may find ways to advance our skills. We may actively invite change into our lives. We may gather in groups to explore together. We may seek a guide to help us along our way.
On Twitter, my handle is @WorldChrysalis. My writings are very much about Openings on a global scale. With change and chaos, come Openings. Using Chrysalis as a metaphor, the caterpillar of our past is transforming to the butterfly of our future. The imaginal cells that are forming the butterfly are actively seeking Openings that will move them forward in creating new systems, increasing their numbers and releasing the past.

Timing And Perception
Seeking Openings is not a well-lit path at present. We are exploring new territory. It is not a time for delusional thinking. Our timing and perception are important here. We cannot force Openings – they are not of our creation alone. They are magical in one sense. We must balance our active pursuit with allowing Openings to unfold in our lives.
Our perception is involved as well. One consideration is will versus intent. Seeking openings is not about certainty; it is about setting a direction. There is no point in trying to rigidly will Openings into existence. Rather, it is about setting our intention to seek them and see what is possible.
I am going to give it a try. I have nothing to lose as long as I keep myself centered and present. I will seek Openings in my life this year and see what it brings.
