Rupture Creates Openings
So much is torn apart in my life now. What good does this do? I see destruction and rupture and not much else.
The Nature Of Rupture
Rupture is an instance of breaking or bursting suddenly and completely. It carries with it a sense of speed, violence and coming apart. We’ve experienced several ruptures recently in our social fabric. Although the conditions causing these ruptures developed over time, the tears in our social fabric seemed sudden and dramatic to us.
It took some time for us to see the true depth and impact of this. We had not experienced these things in such intensity before – political polarization, pandemic fear, loss, isolation, resistance and significant changes in the way we live and work. We knew that what was could not be put back together again.
Rupture is permanent. It may be repaired or reconfigured, but what was is gone for good. The sooner we see this, the better. The only direction to go in is forward.
Regaining Balance
After a rupture has occurred, we are likely unsettled and unsteady. We must rebalance, so that we can stand on firm ground once again. We may feel shaky. We may not understand what has happened. We may be perplexed. Our relationships may be different. The values we had may be challenged or strengthened. There is a need to reorient ourselves to the present.
Once we are standing again, we can brush ourselves off and begin to rebalance our lives. What is the balance we want to create? Has rupture affected the nature of our world enough that we want to make significant changes? What is our place in the world? What challenges us? What comforts us? What have we lost?

Regaining balance is an opportunity to find our place in a world that has changed. There is the prospect of reinvention. We have freedom and open space that did not exist before. Using our imaginations, we can create a life we want to live. A new environment is forming around us and it behooves us to participate.
Looking Around
Once we have regained our balance, we can begin to look around. Our observation will inform us what has happened in our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual worlds. We can look within and without with our minds and hearts. We can look from above, below and at eye level. We can create the point of view with which we want to look at our lives and the world around us.
What is the nature of our world now, after the ruptures we have experienced? Do we need time to mourn or are we ready to create change? Do we like what we see or has too much been lost? What do our observations tell us about the present and what the future may be?
How does what is happening affect our individual lives? Is something beckoning us? Is there something we want to do to positively affect the world? Is something alarming us that we will commit to changing? How has our immediate environment changed and what does that mean for us? We can answer these questions and start to rebuild.
Finding The Openings
Ruptures naturally create Openings. There are fissures, holes and cracks all around us now. Some we could fall through and we must be careful. Others present Openings that can positively affect our lives. What are the Openings we see right now? Are they ones we may fall into or are they opportunities? Discernment of this is key to our well-being.
As the landscape of our lives reconfigures, dreams that once seemed elusive are within our reach. We just have to say yes. Hesitancy may be based on the nature of a world that is gone. Fresh starts are innate to a rupture.
As our world transforms, we can take advantage of a new landscape that is rich with Openings!
Rupture certainly is uncomfortable and unsettling. It can be looked at merely as destruction or as a way to create Openings that I can now say yes to.
