Releasing Past Openings
My life is very different now. Things that worked before no longer fit. At one time, they mattered a great deal to me. Do I move on from them?
No Longer A Fit
Life is always in movement. Sometimes we outgrow the things of our past, as they are no longer a fit. No need to carry them with us, as they weigh us down and take up room that new things could fill. It is good to develop the capacity to release things that no longer serve us. It is an essential skill if we are to make the most of change.
Openings that mattered to us in the past can lose their relevance in our lives. If, for example, an Opening appeared a few years ago that led to new work that was just right, but now circumstances have changed, that Opening is best left behind. We can recognize this, acknowledge the power of the Opening for us at one time and release that Opening as new ones appear.
We tend to hang on to the past and are slow to recognize when something is not a fit. This is natural. However, if we hold on too long, our movement is stifled, and we may not see the Openings presently available to us. Release is a refresh of our lives. We change over time mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.
Honoring Past Openings
As we find that something that came as an Opening in our life is no longer a fit, we can honor that we have changed. Here are some ways to honor past Openings:
- Journal your journey from the time the Opening first appeared – how it showed up, what led to your decision to walk through it, how your life changed and how your life is different now because of it.
- Create a way to release your journey with the Opening – acknowledge it, acknowledge yourself, affirm that you are moving on and release its presence in your life. You can be creative here. Bury a representation of the Opening in the earth. Symbolically release it as you would a bird taking flight. Burn something that represents the opening allowing it to transform – perhaps a description of the Opening and all it did for you.
- Map your road ahead. Acknowledge the Opening and visualize the path that is before you, once you release the Opening.
Starting Anew
As Openings are released, we are no longer weighted down. We are free to start anew. We can explore new Openings and redefine where we want our life to go. We can follow our dreams. Possibility surrounds us. Our past no longer burdens our present.
Our world has sped up in the last two decades. Availability of information, technological advances and global communication have changed us. So many things change quickly, and we must keep up or find ourselves left behind. We must be nimble, adept at change and alert to all that surrounds us. Starting anew is done at the pace of the world, not at the pace we may prefer.
Release aids us in keeping up with the speed of our world. We are lighter. We recognize changes as they occur, and we adapt our lives accordingly. We keep pace with the world around us.

Always Being Present
To thrive and grow in our world, the best place to be is in the present moment. The past can fill us with regret – we cannot change it. The future is not here yet – trying to know what it holds can fill us with anxiety. The only place where we are fully alive is in the present moment. Openings only inhabit our present. It is in the present that we find them.
When an Opening is no longer relevant that is a sign we are ready to release it. Let it go with honor. Recognize there is a new path waiting. We want to be lighter and unburdened as we find and walk that path. The power of release is integral to being fully present to our lives. New Openings are waiting for us now! Let’s find them.
Developing my ability to release what no longer serves me is so freeing. I commit to maintain the power of release as I journey through my life!
