Tunnels
Wait a minute, I’m through an Opening. Where is the new world it promised?
Entering An Opening
Openings are invitations to go somewhere new. They may come in the form of an insight, a dramatic change, a person we meet, an expansion or contraction in our life or a new opportunity, affecting our mind, body, emotions or spirit. Change is inherent in Openings. We are going from one place to another. Something has propelled us to leave where we are and to go somewhere new.
The choice of whether to enter an Opening can be complex. It can involve changes in our lives, uncertainty, discomfort, letting parts of our lives go or accepting new things into our lives. The choice of whether to enter an Opening can also be simple. Something may push us into it – say a new job, a major change in a relationship, a desire for adventure or a move to a new location. None of this is easy.
Openings imply movement. They help us progress on our journeys by changing the circumstances of our lives. They challenge us to grow and adapt. They increase our wisdom, require courage and open new vistas. All of this is considered or experienced as we enter an Opening. Do we want to stay where we are or move into something new? Are we ready for the change that an Opening brings?
Expectation
As we enter an Opening, we bring our expectations with us. Expectation can have many forms – excitement, dread, uncertainty, anticipation. It is a rare person who can enter an Opening with a fully blank slate, without expectation. Our expectations influence our experience of an Opening. If we enter an Opening expecting our world will change in wonderful ways, what happens if it does not?
A basic expectation on entering an Opening is that our world will be, in some way, new. To a larger or smaller degree, it most likely will be. However, when our minds have created a vision in advance of what that world will be, what did we base our vision on? Have we made it “real” without it being so? Humans often want safety, so we fill up uncertainty with our own imaginings of what we think or want something to be and then we believe them.
It is best that we enter an Opening recognizing that what it will bring us is, in part, unknown until we are there. There is an adventure to this, and we let the Opening show us what it is. Better to get comfortable with the uncertainty of an Opening, than to make up a story we are falsely comfortable with. The only time we know what an Opening brings is in the present moment, when we see it.

Tunnels
Some of us have experienced Openings that show us the folly of expectations. We enter an Opening and it is not what we thought it would be. We may even have prepared for the Opening based on our expectations. We wanted to feel a higher level of control in the face of the unknown. But guess what? We have no control because our expectations do not fit where we are and then where are we?
Sometimes, we find ourselves in-between what we left behind and what is to come. It’s like being in a tunnel. Aspects of our old life are released but the new aspects are not yet visible. We have no choice but to walk step-by-step through whatever the Opening presents. This is the unknown that we may have tried to shield ourselves from. Our expectations and stories do us no good now. Best always to act from the present moment.
As we walk forward, the Opening will begin to present itself. The “tunnel” may have its purpose too, to prepare us for what is to come or give us space to settle. If we embrace the tunnel, we will thrive. The future is ours to create, in cooperation with the nature of the Opening. What would make us think an Opening would have the new aspects of our lives ready-made and waiting every time?
Stepping Through
Not all Openings have tunnels, but some do. Let’s accept them when they show up. They have their value and make some Openings even better. When a tunnel shows up, embrace it and the good places it will take us to.
Best to start walking and see what this Opening has to offer.
