Spinning
I am dizzy from all this change and the craziness of what is going on in the world. I’m spinning.
Whirling
Whirling dervishes are members of Sufism known for their unique spinning dance which is a form of meditation and worship aimed at attaining spiritual ecstasy. The practice, called Sema, symbolizes the spiritual journey of the soul to God, where dancers spin in circles to music aiming to achieve a state of spiritual ecstasy and connection with the divine. Spinning to spiritual ecstasy – that’s a concept.
Could it be that the journey we are on now is a positive one? What we are experiencing seems chaotic and unsettling. It is challenging, for sure. What is this spinning doing for us? It is moving us, shaking us up, changing our perspectives and landing us in new places. Were we getting complacent? Was there a need for change? Is this spinning an Opening?
Spinning can be productive. When we make a cake, we throw the ingredients in a bowl and spin them. The result is something new. This spinning is not pleasant, but will our world reconfigure in positive ways? There is danger present, that’s true. Our spinning could result in injury or loss. What we knew may be gone. With our spinning, change is inevitable. Could our spinning be leading to something new?
Speed
In my work with Lynn Andrews, she often spoke of the world speeding up. At the time, I thought she was referring to the lightning speed of information sharing and challenges in keeping up. Recently, I have been looking anew at what she said. Time is speeding up and our relationship with time is changing. Time seems to be moving so quickly and we can sometimes move in and out of it.
In the Star Trek movies and tv shows, warp speed allows all kinds of change. Warp speed is faster than light travel allowing starships to cover vast distances in space quickly. The warp drive creates a warp bubble around the ship allowing it to move through subspace bypassing the limitations of conventional physics. What current limitations could our spinning help us to transcend?
Can we agree that major change is upon us? Spinning may be the alchemy that is bringing this change about and getting us ready for it. So much is being rearranged so quickly. Radical proposals are being made at dizzying speed. If the changes proposed are realized, our world and our experiences will be so different than what we know now.

Centering
How do the whirling dervishes keep their center while spinning? Dervishes tilt their head slightly to the right countering inner ear stimulation and dizziness. They move with a steady pivot of their left leg. It keeps them grounded and reduces physical strain. One arm is extended upward, pointing toward the heavens, while the other is held downward, symbolizing a connection between heaven and earth. Dervishes wear long, flowing robes that billow outwards due to centrifugal force. The skirts stabilize the dancer, helping to maintain balance. The robes play a functional role in reducing the sensation of dizziness, acting as a ‘stabilizing wheel’ around the dancer.
What centers us as we spin in this world? That’s what we need to find out. Openings may help us. We can open ourselves to realizing we are in a new world, as uncertain as we are about what this new world is or will be. It will require new ways of being, whichever way it goes. The old world is gone and a new world struggles to be born (Antonio Gramsci).
Let’s keep our eyes out for Openings that will help us.
Good Outcomes
We may as well proceed towards good outcomes from all this change. We can help make it so by changing ourselves to thrive within it. Yes, it is not an easy task but a smart one, as change is here and the world is different. We have yet to see outcomes and have an opportunity now to help shape them for the better.
Keeping my eyes on one spot helps me steady. I will focus on thriving and making the most of this time as I spin.
