The Freedom Of Uncertainty

ptwisting path in forest where you cannot see far ahead

I am feeling so uneasy. My future is so uncertain. How can I prepare for or even imagine a future with the world around me in so much disarray? I can pretend to have certainty, but would only be fooling myself and likely causing myself problems that I don’t need.

Yes, There Is Discomfort In The Unknown

The unknown is just that – unknown. The presence of the unknown can destabilize us and leave us feeling that we have no control over our lives. We want to feel that we know where we are going. When we go in one direction and can only see a few feet in front of us, our destination is unclear. In these times, as we walk there is chaos surrounding us, complicating things.

Uncertainty puts us fully in the present moment. We no longer have the past, and the future is unseen. We can move ahead only one step at a time. This can be an advantage for us. Rather than looking back or too far forward, we can be aware right where we are. Our decisions will be better, we will know our surroundings and be living fully in the reality of our lives.

There is comfort to be found in knowing where you are, in not trying to guess what the future will be or wishing that the past would return. We can address the discomfort we feel with uncertainty, in order to diminish its destructive effects. The present moment is, truly, all that we have. As we release the need for control, peace will come.

Uncertainty Gives us Open Space

Often, we do not see the open space that uncertainty gives us, as we are encompassed by our discomfort and fear of it. All kinds of possibilities lie within the unknown. You may have heard that physicists believe that Universe is 95% dark matter – another way of saying the Universe is only 5% known at this time. Their imaginations are put to use and their journey is an exciting one.

Dark matter lies within our human universe as well. It can be unsettling, so we must do our best to release that feeling. Right now, we can guess but not be certain, what the world will be like in 2022. We have the opportunity to let our imaginations loose on possibilities and prepare for them, knowing they may not turn out exactly as we imagine.

Open space also allows us to get clear on what we want for the future and move towards creating it. There is time and nothing prescribed or predestined is locking us in. It is like being in an open field where we can go in any direction that we want to. Freedom is ours within uncertainty – if we can tame our fear and discomfort.

Making The Most Of Uncertainty

There are not many alternatives to accepting the uncertainty of these times. There are knowns that we can find comfort in, however. We have a good sense of how we can protect our health and well-being. There are glimmers now of returning to more active lives. Let these knowns strengthen us, as we go forward.

Right now, we can identify what possibilities exist for us. It may be realizing that we have time to gain a skill or to make a move that we want to. We can use this time to focus on these possibilities, releasing anything that is holding us back. In doing so, we set an intent that will give us energy and help us move forward.

Using the open space that uncertainty affords us is mainly a matter of changing our point of view. Rather than looking at the uncertainties that surround us as dangerous, we can embrace them and see their possibility. We can trust ourselves to navigate and make the most of them. So many discoveries have come from the unknown – that is why they are discoveries.

My New Directions Coaching program helps you learn how to embrace uncertainties and see their possibilities.

The Freedom Of Uncertainty

Here is an exercise each of us can do to make the most of the freedom of uncertainty.

Draw a circle. The circle represents your life. In some areas of the circle write what is known about your life right now. In other areas of the circle, write the uncertainties you are facing now (perhaps whether you will return to your workplace or work remotely in the future, when you will see certain people again with confidence that everyone is safe or if you will be able to enjoy past pleasures in the new world we will emerge into), leaving plenty of space between them. Once you have written down these things, draw a wide circle around each of the uncertainties you wrote down. Within those circles imagine the possibilities each uncertainty offers you and write them down in a different color. Let this be a map to making the most of the freedom of uncertainty.

The freedom of uncertainty is ours for the asking. The price of admission is to embrace the unknown in our lives and use it for our gain.

Can I get to seeing uncertainty as being a beautiful element of my life?  I think I can, if I make use of it and make my life better because of it.
