An Opening for All of Us

A sunset in the clouds, orange and yellow tones, with no land and the silhouette of a bird flying.

What is going on with time?? It is all over the place.

Speeding Up

Years ago, Lynn Andrews spoke to us about the world speeding up. Did she mean the information age, technology, global communication? That’s what some of us thought and it made sense to us. We had to adapt, find a way to keep ourselves centered amidst change and learn how to navigate within it. We focused on balance – keeping steady and productive but taking time for fun, rest and our priorities. That may not make it now.

Lately, time seems to be all over the place – not enough of it, frequent changes messing up our schedules, too much to do in too little time and seeing how time is stressing so many others. We are having to discern more than ever what to put our focus on. Our lives are not predictable when it comes to time. Time seems to have warped into a new flow that we do not recognize. It seems to have gotten unmanageable.

This may not be the speeding up of time we think it is, based on past experience. It is a new time, one that we must learn to flow with. It goes a lot faster. It operates differently than what we have known. If we get in its flow, we move almost effortlessly and smoothly. If we accept and deal with its erratic moments, we’ll be supported by time. Time has a new nature and best that we get comfortable with it.

Our Relationship with Time

Our relationship with time is something we must cultivate. How often do we do that? Now, we are up against the wall because time is changing. What worked for us before will not work now. To adjust, we can examine our past and present relationships with time. Does time often stress us? Do we have too much or too little? Do we stay calm in our relationship with time? What role does time play in our lives?

Albert Einstein said Time and space are modes by which we think and not conditions in which we live.Goodness, what does this mean? Perhaps it holds a clue to where we are now. Do we have the opportunity now to transcend time as we once knew it? In the past, the idea of managing time was an oxymoron. Can we manage time itself? Not really, we manage our relationship to it.

Let’s stop now and examine our individual relationships with time. How did we do with time in the past? How are we doing now? What is the nature of time in our lives in the present moment? Do we see any clues to how time is acting now? Can we identify effective ways to flow with time? How do we make the most of time and eliminate the negative aspects of our relationship with it.

How can you benefit from a new relationship with time? Let’s explore together!

Old Ways Do Not Work

Here are some ways we may have worked with time in the past:

  • Used a planner and worked hard to manage our time.
  • Found ways to counter the stress time brought into our lives.
  • Worked hard to be efficient in our use of time.
  • Tried to “manage” time itself.
  • Found ways to get away from time.

Here are some thoughts on a relationship with the new time we are experiencing

  • Stay fully in the present moment.
  • Increase our awareness of the nature of time as it is now.
  • When things change, trust that we will be able to adjust.
  • Let go of expectations of exactly what we will do in a day and develop an ability to flow with what happens in the present moment.
  • Examine the nature of our stress with time. Is it real or of our own making?
