Wallowing
Little is happening. I feel becalmed in my life. I wouldn’t mind some movement or an Opening appearing.
Stuck
We all have been there – stuck. Do we want to stay there or move on? Stuck can feel good and it can feel bad. It provides some rest and release from things that we may be resistant to. However, when we are staying too long in an unproductive or uncomfortable place, being stuck does not serve us.
Being stuck is in high contrast with being in motion. It is disorienting. We lose our center and perspective. Things get blurry and a path ahead is not clear. We slow down and insights or Openings are hard to find. Our senses are dulled. This is not a place from which to make choices or decisions about our lives.

When we are stuck, it can easily turn into wallowing and indulging in our inaction to a high degree. This never serves us and can be detrimental. Movement is a valuable element of our lives. Of course, we must pause and slow down at times and maintain a balance. However, balance is key here – too much either way, for too long, is not good for us.
Openings May Not Appear
When we reach the point of wallowing, we may be unable to attract or to see new Openings in our lives. Our senses are not keen enough to detect them. Our vision is limited. We can even become lethargic. The world turns gray and our motivation ceases. That is not a state conducive to the appearance of Openings!
How do we reach a point of wallowing? Sometimes, it sneaks up on us. We are going along in our lives and find ourselves out of the action we used to be in. We can wallow because of fear. Wallowing, at first, is a safe space. We don’t have to look at things we do not want to face. We can stay right where we are.
There may be times when we are just fine having no new Openings in our lives. Sometimes, it goes on too long. Some signs of this are: we have an underlying lack of ease or discontent, we are sluggish, we are bored and not sure what we want to do. We are in a space of negativity. We are not in action and are in a lull of our own making.
Balance Between Doing and Being
A focus on both being and doing is a key element of coaching. Looking at being and doing can be very helpful in exploring wallowing and being stuck in our lives. Being is a state of reflection and often of rest. Doing is moving forward and being in action. Both are important to healthy and productive lives. Each of us needs to find the right balance between being and doing in our lives.
It behooves us to periodically look at the levels of being and doing in our lives. If we are experiencing any signs of wallowing or being stuck, we can go right there. To what degree are we currently doing and being in our lives? Does the balance seem right? Is our being or doing out of whack? Does being or doing need correcting?
How do we adjust our doing or being? By paying attention. We each know or can find our right balance. Adjusting involves making room for more or less of either or correcting an imbalance of being or doing. Taking one small step forward or taking time to reflect can make a big difference in getting out of our wallowing.
Getting To Our Openings
Once we are aware of our wallowing and have rebalanced our being and doing, we are far along to welcoming Openings back into our lives. The prospect of Openings enlivens us. We are no longer stuck and can contemplate movement and a path ahead in our journeys. Our senses are keen, our energy is reactivated and we are engaged in our lives. We are ready!
Oh, it’s good to be in motion again. No more wallowing for me.
