Creative Openings

Opening to a cave. Plain gray rock with deep entrance

This Opening does not seem to be leading me anywhere. It is all within.

An Inside Job

The foundation of our lives lies within. Without that foundation, we are hollow, with nothing to guide us or back up our actions. Not all Openings lead us forward in the world. Their focus is within. Eventually, these Openings lead us outward, but not at first. So much of our movement depends on how we are within – our perspective, our strength, our emotions, our minds, our intentions.

Our foundation does not grow on its own. It needs to be intentionally developed and nurtured. It requires our focus, attention, skill and learning to build it. How are we growing in life? What do we need for our foundation? What can sabotage us? Is our foundation uniquely of our own making or was it built by the people and attitudes that we were exposed to in our childhoods?

Our society sometimes calls this focus on our foundation personal growth or personal development. The key is the word personal. Creative Openings ask us to look at ourselves, see what’s working and what is not, to muster the courage and strength to change what we must to grow. They also ask us to be seekers. To explore who we are, what we want to do and find what we need to do so.

Embracing Creative Openings

Building a foundation is not an automatic or a simple process. In some cases, it is much harder than looking outward and taking actions prescribed by others. It is an inner journey that can be fascinating and challenging. Our society does not always support this kind of seeking. Society likes safety and conformity. Personal growth and development can sometimes give us neither of these.

Creative Openings must first be embraced and seen for what they are – an invitation to go within. This can be scary at first. What do we know about what lies within? Our emotions may have taken us for a ride. Our minds may have taken over other aspects of ourselves. We may have experienced fear at the prospect of change or going within. We may have felt it is territory we do not want to explore. We may be intimidated by the presence of the unknown.

Here are some ways to get comfortable with going within:

  • Acknowledge that fear is a natural emotion that we must overcome it in order to be our best selves.
  • Set a clear and strong intention for why and how we are going within.
  • Get the support we need.
  • Look to those who may be a bit further along the path and ask for their guidance.
  • Make going within and personal development high values in your life.

Blooming

As we progress on our journey within, we see the results. We begin to bloom. Our sense of self and our confidence increase because we are our own guide, not others. Because we are self-guided, the shifts we experience fit our needs and vision. We are opening to ourselves. Creative Openings propel this. They can come because of dissatisfaction with our lives, unwelcome change or questions we have that are not answered.

As we go within, we get ready for change by building our strength, courage and perspective.  We have had something happen that we want to respond to, in the best possible way. Or we see the value of seeking in bringing us a better life. It is our intention and our commitment that propel us and, eventually, lead us to growth.

Going within, we begin to get a handle on our emotions. We get to know our minds, how they work and what triggers them. We calm ourselves because within is where anxiety begins. We release our fear, as what is within begins to be better known to us. We become a bit more comfortable with the unknown as we confront it regularly. Ultimately we center, as we know what lies within us and can manage it.

A New Way

Creative Openings and going within bring us to seeing our lives and the world in a new way. This is where the outward action can begin. Perhaps we have developed new skills or sourced a creativity we didn’t know we had that we can now put to use. Perhaps our perspective has changed and is leading us in a new, exciting direction. We may be on our way to a whole new life thanks to a Creative Opening!

I get it now. Change comes from within and some Openings help us get there.
